Four new commissions have come through the festival's Art in Manufacturing programme, positioning Lancashire as a hub of creativity and craft. The Art in Manufacturing residencies began in 2016 and take place between November and July. The finished work will be exhibited at Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery.

This year, the Lexus car maker exhibit is the first thing you see as you enter. And so, every year, they put a lot of time, effort, and money into developing a unique art installation that conveys their vision of the automotive future. This year, we got not one but two such exhibits under the joint heading of 'Time'.

One memorable chapter was during a Bio Art Residency at School of Visual Arts in New York. The residency took place within a state-of-the-art biotechnology lab. The faculty included leading biologists and artists who encouraged scientific inquiry through the open-ended approach of making art.

We walked the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) and WantedDesign Manhattan from end to end, stopped into dozens of showrooms in SoHo and Tribeca and saw everything from a shade made out of eggshells to a hug machine designed by a group of students from New York’s School of Visual Arts. Pittsburgh is famous for manufacturing steel. One flag manufacturer who supplies flags to the city government stated that the shade of blue used is “UN Blue” which is the same shade used in the United Nations flag. Their mission for anyone visiting the museum is to experience creativity through the visual arts.
