The Wren & The Bear process

Emmeline Illustration

Recently I've been working on a brand new illustration for the Enchanted Forest exhibition (for the 200 years of Grimm's fairytales celebration). I've been taking a couple of snapshots as I've gone along to show my progress. I don't often do this, but I think it's nice for people to get a glimpse into how I work! As usual I started building the illustration using pencil sketches with ink brush lines on top.

Good Fonts, Bad Fonts, and the Presidency

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

Somehow we’ve let the election season come to a close without thanking both parties for making this an 100% H&Co election. Continuing the signature voice of its 2008 campaign, Obama for America kept Gotham as its typographic keystone, this year adding our Sentinel typeface as a companion slab serif. The GOP chose fonts from us as well, the Romney campaign settling on Mercury for its serif and Whitney for its sans.

Amsterdam

Emmeline Illustration

Hey everyone! Boy oh boy do I have some adventures to tell you about! As you may or may not have heard, last week I spent some time in the beautiful city of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. I think it's completely fair to say I was in desperate need of a break. There'd been a few months there without a single day off working on those books, and yes, it does slowly drain your soul after a while (not that I don't love working intensely on lots of children's book commissions!).

The Plastic Wood Type

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

One of the joys of designing typefaces is seeing the flavors that designers coax out of your work. A fair amount of exploration always goes into our own process: Gotham wouldn’t be Gotham were it not able to look simultaneously young and old , and one of Idlewild’s virtues is the range of wildly different qualities that emerge in company of friends.

Emmeline's Christmas Giveaway

So it's that time of year again. I've been feeling pretty casual about it all so far, no present panics for me - but if you're hunting for something special for someone, or you fancy an early treat yourself - then you're in luck. I'm giving away one very lovely signed canvas print of my 'Snow' illustration (along with a few postcards) and a runner's up prize of a pretty sticker set (and again, yes, some postcards!).

An H&Co Type Tasting

We keep a running tally of the interesting media in which we’ve seen our fonts used, from corrugated cardboard to topiary. But with the holiday season upon us, things have taken a decidedly gustatory turn.

Fallen Flowers homeware

Emmeline Illustration

What's this heap of pretty you say? Well! It's a 'Fallen flowers' surface pattern that I finished yesterday, and has now hit the digital shelves of Ohh Deer as a gorgeous cushion (and soon hopefully notebooks/other nice things). Hurray! I've had a bit of radio silence in terms of producing work for Ohh Deer (I'm one of the first bunch of illustrators to get involved) - I've just been drowning in a swampy mush of book work.

Giving Thanks

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

One of the things we’re grateful for at H&Co are the designers who treat our typefaces with such extraordinary care. These days, some of the most exciting work that we get to see is on Dribbble, where designers of the highest caliber share their works-in-progress with the world. This weekend, I gathered some of my favorite fragments that designers have created using our typefaces: here are three new Dribbble collections using The Proteus Project , Sentinel and Shades.

Introducing The New Tungstens

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

A good type family balances cohesion and diversity. Its styles need to feel related, but each is entitled to its own personality. Nothing’s worse than paying for a collection of two dozen fonts, only to discover that each speaks in exactly the same voice. Tungsten began as a focussed set of styles that aspired to being disarming instead of pushy. “Smart, tough, and sexy” was how we described the design, a brief that gave us enough latitude to create four distinct designs: a spo

Introducing Idlewild

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

Type designers are plagued by visions, recurring images which can only be exorcized by turning them into letters. For years we’ve been consumed by a particular quality of curve, overstuffed at the corners and punctuated by sharp edges, and gradually over time we’ve been able to give these apparitions form: first as unrelated characters, later as an alphabet, and finally as a family of fonts.

THE SONG OF THE CYNODONT

Cynodont 250 million years ago, before death negotiated its current truce with life, death nearly wiped out all life on earth in a fit of exuberance. During the Permian Extinction , 96% of all marine species and 70% of all land based vertebrates became extinct. 83% of all genera of insects were wiped out. The planet became a global abattoir, reeking with the stench of spattered life forms whose long and miraculous histories had come abruptly to naught.

AGAINST SCHOLARSHIP IN THE ARTS

Illustration Art

"The shudder of awe," wrote Goethe, "is humanity's highest faculty." This shudder explains why many people are attracted to the arts. But other people, who aren't so comfortable shuddering, have found more orderly ways to approach art. For example, art historians try to understand art by researching the lives of artists. (The new biography of Saul Steinberg , a splendid piece of scholarship, devotes 732 pages to how Steinberg's childhood, his sex life, and his paternal grandfather might have sha
