Graphic design is a wide and increasingly specialized field, so we tried to keep recommendations as general as possible. 1. Avoid the Obvious. When reaching for a different weight, turning to a sympathetic but distinctively different typeface can add drama to a design. Sentinel and Archer are two slab serifs with very different origins — one a nineteenth century ‘Antique,’ the other a twenty-first century invention full of circular ‘ball terminals’ — but using them together adds visual interest to an otherwise muted composition.

As a graphic designer, you can never have enough fonts. Seems like a lot of graphic designers, me included, have a habit of hoarding a lot of fonts in their respective computers. Admit it though. You have only used three or four of your typefaces and you’re still waiting for the right time you are going to use those other fancy letters. In any case, there are a lot of free fonts from the internet that you could download for free.

There were many obstacles and surprises on the road to this book, but I'm very pleased with the great job publisher Dan Zimmer of The Illustrated Press has done with it.

With the boom of small breweries comes a lot of opportunities to innovate beer label designs. For a long time now, we have iconic beer bottle designs from Heineken, Budweiser, Beck’s, and other big name brands. But sadly, having a big brand provides less opportunity to redesign, especially if a drastic change would result in an uproar. Smaller breweries, however, are getting really creative of their beer labels, defying even the established conventions that survived until today.
