If you choose to regularly create artistic work, whether it’s your main source of income or knitting scarves in front of the telly, you will likely have been met with comments such as “ooh, could you do me something like that?” “Could you whip me up a quick logo?” or “Could you draw my portrait?” (and the list goes on). It is a constant issue – and although I hate to say it – I don’t think it’s going to go away anytime soon.

I was commissioned by Think Publishing to create lettering and illustration for a the cover and feature article in Optometry Today magazine. The feature was all about Dry Eye Syndrome and how to treat it and so I was commissioned to create some elaborate lettering for the cover and some illustrations to sit alongside the article that helped to illustrate the text.

That last couple of weeks I have completed these two drawings and this painting: 'Relaxing After A Hot Day' watercolour and gouache 24 x 31cm This scene was a joy to paint. Having found a lovely tree (possibly Birch?) over hanging the river Marden, 5 minutes walk from my back door, I knew I just had to paint it. I took a brisk walk during twilight and came back with a collection of photographs that would inform all of the composition.

I've been away a little over a week at ICON10—The Illustrator's Conference, in Detroit—but more on that in a later post. Last night, I arrived home to a happy box of new books from Holiday House. The third of the science picture books by David A. Adler and me is now out in paperback! MAGNETS PUSH, MAGNETS PULL came out last year to some excellent reviews.

I finished reading ?? Just Kids by Patti Smith. What a beautiful read ?? As I was reading it, the book reminded me of my uni years and final year, working on final project. Just over a month ago, I was invited to London to appear in the IPSE Freelancer's showcase and illustrate live portraits for National Freelancers Day! IPSE's NFD event took place in the beautiful King's Place venue, and I set up in a gorgeous room overlooking the canal. This was my fourth time at a National Freelancer's event, and after winning National Freelancer of the Year in 2016, I got to see the title passed on to the lovely Iona Bain in the freelancer awards this year!

Last week Steve Ditko left us to join the hoary hosts of Hoggoth. He will be remembered worldwide for his role in creating Spiderman , definitely one of his lesser artistic achievements. Ditko was a highly imaginative comic artist whose half baked political philosophies eventually led him to a role as a hermit and an outsider artist. He would disapprove of any tribute that purported to interpret his work.

A little love letter to The Beano comic on their 80th birthday! I think the image says it all, really, but it's been great for me to follow the threads of inspiration throughout my life from my childhood favourites, to the work I'm creating today. Here's hoping that the children's comics I'm creating, like Nona The Ninth for Goof comic , help inspire some other excitable little girl whose damp hair smells of chlorine, but is absolutely beaming after spending her pocket money on comics.
