School Playground WIP

Chris Dunn Illustration/Fine Art

No painting today as I am preparing for my upcoming illustration workshop at Marlborough College Summer School. However here are a couple of photos of the painting so far. The drawing has been transferred and cleaned up with a 2H pencil. Here the sky and trees well on their way and I've just started to block in the school and playground.

What Emmeline Wore In July - Day 10 - Poppy England

Emmeline Illustration

It's a perfect Summer's day, so it was just the right time to put on this beautious Poppy England dress. Poppy England are a lovely little company inspired by picture books, making dresses for little'uns and grown ups (I've been a fan for ages!). They sent me this Beatrice Boats dress to feature in this project, along with a teeny tiny illustrated book that comes with each item.

Typography on Instagram

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

Over instant messaging at our office, the typographic obsessions of our typeface designers, graphic designers, web developers and businesspeople have lately coalesced into a game of photographic oneupsmanship. Included are some typographic artifacts that have escaped scholarship, a few excerpts from our studio library , and some typographic moments that we’ve encountered in our

Choosing Fonts for Tight Tracking

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

Lately, we’ve been developing a taste for tight letterspacing. Our clients have been doing the same: designers know that tight tracking is an effective way to make any message seem more immediate and energetic. But not every typeface is designed for close quarters, and the wrong font can ruin the effect. Here are a few things to consider when setting type tightly.

I'm visiting my family this week and so I've been reunited with the family-cat Suki! She's a cheeky, furry, adorable wild-thing. So, we're nearly at the end of the What Emmeline Wore In July project! Only two more days to go, and really it's been a lot easier than I anticipated (no significant burn-out or cramped up hands). I think it's definitely helped that I've been organised with it and I sketched some base poses on a huge sheet beforehand, saving me a little time and making sure there's eno

Pull Quotes

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

It’s surprising how much writing that isn’t about design turns out to be about design. For years, I’ve been squirreling away sentiments that resonate with me, scribbling them into sketchbooks or thumbing them into many generations of smartphone. Their sources vary: a hard-boiled mystery that I read on vacation, an in-flight magazine interview with a restaurateur, a book about viniculture, Twitter.

I've been staying with my family this week, and (of course) we all know one of the best things to do when you're re-united with your family is play a ton of boardgames. Bonus points for anyone who can work out what game I've featured (roughly) in the illustration above!

From Visualization to Execution: Exploring Our Strengths as Designers

Speaker: Sean Adams, ArtCenter College of Design

Thomas Edison once said “Vision without execution is hallucination.” This statement applies not just to invention, but to graphic design. One of the greatest strengths of graphic designers is the ability to first develop a concept and then execute it to make it real. From visualization and ideation all the way through to actuation and execution, each step of this process takes skill and expertise.
