No More Labels - a project about mental health

Lisa Maltby

In the light of Mental Health Awareness Week, I wanted to create some work that challenged and provoked attitudes towards mental health. There are a lot of 'labels' placed upon the people who experience mental illness, and that in itself is part of the problem because it feeds into the stigma that having a mental illness is somehow a weakness. It makes it harder to reach out for help.

Mr Toad In Court

Chris Dunn Illustration/Fine Art

'Mr Toad In Court' watercolour and gouache 51 x 39cm Last week I completed this complicated scene from 'The Wind In The Willows'. Mr Toad has been brought in front of a judge to hear his sentence for stealing a car and driving recklessly. My rough drawing. Compared with the finished painting you can see I made some changes, especially on the faces. I followed all the usual procedures on the creation of this illustration.

The Cult of the Complex

A List Apart

’Tis a gift to be simple. Increasingly, in our line of work, ’tis a rare gift indeed. In an industry that extols innovation over customer satisfaction, and prefers algorithm to human judgement (forgetting that every algorithm has human bias in its DNA), perhaps it should not surprise us that toolchains have replaced know-how. Likewise, in a field where young straight white dudes take an overwhelming majority of the jobs (including most of the management jobs) it’s perhaps to be expected that web

Un/divided

The Book Design Blog

We love this catalogue/look-book from Alma Kamal for Un/divided, a concept for a clothing store that aims to break down gender-norms. Clothing isn’t separated into gendered sections, and instead the models are photographed in outfits that mix clothing from traditional genders. Just loving the general art direction and typography in this one, especially the creamy, off-white paper stock.

Proofs of Life in the Universe!

Anna Raff Illustration

I can't show much at this stage, but this week I received a special package in the mail: first proofs for THE DAY THE UNIVERSE EXPLODED MY HEAD. This is that space poetry picture book I've been talking about forever. Written by Allan Wolf, and published by Candlewick Press, it will be out in early March 2019. At fifty-six pages, it seemed like I was painting it forever too, but I'm really pleased with the results.

Fast Fonts

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

Typeface designers frequently speak of curves being fast or slow. We’re often talking about the kind of motion that we imagine having created a shape, whether something feels like the product of a relaxed wrist loosely holding a pen, or pinched fingers meticulously turning a compass. A common topic is changes in speed, whether throughout a curve, an alphabet, or even a family of typefaces.

The Slow Death of Internet Explorer and the Future of Progressive Enhancement

My first full-time developer job was at a small company. We didn’t have BrowserStack, so we cobbled together a makeshift device lab. Viewing a site I’d been making on a busted first-generation iPad with an outdated version of Safari, I saw a distorted, failed mess. It brought home to me a quote from Douglas Crockford, who once deemed the web “the most hostile software engineering environment imaginable.”.

Some of the Fridays on my way to work I go through Portobello Market. Before moving to my new studio space at Kindred Studios last September I saw the market as something which used to be fantastic for antique and second hand bargains and now was replaced by mass produced souveniers and overpriced vintage shirts and vinyls. But it turns out that if you just stick with it and keep going up up up. you'll find true treasure.
