When the inaugural cohort of AZ Awards winners was announced in 2011, it marked a watershed for Canadian design. With the Oiseau des Îles residences, Antonini Darmon flipped this idea on its head, creating a grid-patterned façade that looks like a giant game of tic-tac-toe capped off by a sharply angled roofline.

In downtown Toronto, Teeple Architects completed such a project in 2011 with the award-winning 60 Richmond Street East. For starters, they favoured child-friendly public areas with ample play structures and community gardens over street-level parking; a shared cargo trike program supports the mostly car- free community.

It had a textured paper background, blurry live cameras that highlighted 100 pixel snapshots of campus, and a randomized student of the day. Instead, the emphasis was on collaboration in the classroom, and giving the students a publication outlet. . Today, most newly created academic websites follow a similar pattern.
